Smallholder farmers in East-Africa commonly intercrop maize (Zea mays L.) with grain legumes to maximize utilisation of land and labour, and attain larger crop yields. Conventionally, one legume line is intercropped between each pair of maize lines. This study evaluated the potential of a modifie...

Nitrogen (N) deficiency is a major constraint to the productivity of the African smallholder farming systems. Grain, green manure and forage legumes have the potential to improve the soil N fertility of smallholder farming systems through biological N2-fixation. The N2-fixation of bean (Phaseolus...

The South American forage legume Arachis pintoi was found to be affected by foliar ring spot symptoms in surveys of various localities in the Cauca Valley of Colombia. A filamentous virus (approximately 750 nm) isolated from symptomatic A. pintoi plants induced the characteristic ring spot sympto...

Plant-to-plant phenotypic variation has been observed within accessions of S. capitata maintained at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) since shortly following introduction. A small experiment was conducted to determine the potential importance of natural outcrossing as a cau...

Dryland cereals and legumes are important crops in farming systems across the world. Yet they are frequently neglected among the priorities for international agricultural research and development, often due to lack of information on their magnitude and extent. Given what we know about the globa...

This study was planned to analyse the basis that make Brachiaria species with greater feeding value than Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) for lactating dairy cows. Forty lactating crossbred cows were stall-fed on B. brizantha cv. Piatá or Napier grass cv. French Cameroon supplemented (mixed on...

Inadequate quantity and quality of livestock feed is a persistent constraint to productivity for mixed crop-livestock farming in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. To assess on-farm niches of improved forages, demonstration trials and participatory on-farm research were conducted in four diffe...

A stem gall nematode is reported for the first time on the promising tropical pasture legume Desmodium ovalifolium CIAT 350 in Colombia. Stem galling was usually associated with damage caused by animal trampling. The nematode has been identified as a new genus of the family Anguinidae.
