There is a fair degree of misplaced optimism about common property resource (CPR) management. In investigating common property issues for woodlands in communal areas in Zimbabwe, there are numerous case studies showing a breakdown of local institutions for CPR management, and the lack of any emer...

In 1947, W. J. Eggeling published an account of forest succession at Budongo, Uganda. This interpretation was based on a large-scale comparative plot study, performed in the 1930s and 1940s. This account, with its implication that species richness declines in late succession, endures as a controv...

Over recent years, there has been rapid development of the bamboo industry in China since reform and liberalisation, which have brought about a series of economic policies and regulations favourable to economic development. Between 1981 and 1993, the area covered by bamboo forests expanded at a r...

Conventional method of vegetation description rarely convey the behavioural of response based information needed to describe effectively the world's vegetation for conservation and management purposes. The information required for these purposes may be derived from generic set of plant functional...

Background: Whiteflies are a threat to cassava (Manihot esculenta), an important staple food in many tropical/ subtropical regions. Understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating cassava’s responses against this pest is crucial for developing control strategies. Pathogenesis-related (PR) prote...

This paper describes an application of multi-criteria analysis (MCA) in evaluating and selecting criteria and indicators (C&I) of forest sustainability. The method was applied on a case study involving a forest area managed under the Community-Based Forest Management System of the Department of E...

Understanding of the role and potential of nontimber forest products (NTFPs) for livelihood improvement and conservation has been hindered by a lack of a clear theoretical framework and a functional typology of cases. To help fill this gap, we did a comparative analysis of 61 cases of commercial ...

New seed yam systems from minisetts, minitubers and vine cuttings have been developed for yam production to supplant the traditional systems, which have proven inefficient and costly. The new techniques provide producers in tropical countries with the opportunity to minimize production costs, red...

Several species of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) were found to occur in the cassava clone Secundina, which was thought to be virus- free. A large dsRNA molecule (6.6 x 106 Mr = relative molecular mass)(L-dsRNA) was shown to be graft, but not mechanically transmitted and occurred primarily in a nucl...

[Postharvest root deterioration or vascular streaking of cassava clones (accessions and breeding lines) was evaluated with harvests at different ages (8 and 12 mo.), seasons (beginning and end of wet season), and locations (CIAT-Palmira, Carimagua, and Caribia in Colombia) to assess the effect of environmental factors on cassava genotypes. Vascular streaking was sensitive to any of these environmental factors. Genotype x location interaction was highly significant suggesting that final cv. selection should be carried out in each location. Genetic analysis carried out in one location suggested that inheritance of vascular streaking was, at least partly, controlled by additive factors and was quantitative rather than qualitative. Narrow sense heritability of 0.64 was obtained. Vascular streaking was highly and significantly correlated with root DM content in all the trials conducted during 7 yr. Since free recombination between resistance to vascular streaking and high root DM content may not be possible, the most acceptable balance between these 2 traits should be defined according to the use of product and edaphoclimatic condition of production area prior to selection program. (AS)]
