CIP is working in East Africa to breed varieties of potatoes that combine three forms of resistance to late blight -- the disease that can exact costly tolls on smallholding farmers.
This project aims to improve the livelihoods of Georgian farmers and rural communities by increasing the profitability and sustainability of potato crops and building the capacity of national stakeholders in the seed potato value chain.
Potatoes and sweetpotatoes are valuable cash crops, able to grow in an array of environments and resilient under the effects of climate change, which makes them vital for reliable incomes, especially when other crops fail.
