This chapter focuses on the impacts of climate change on intensive maize and wheat production systems. Some technologies to close the yield gap to achieve sustainable intensification are also discussed.

Shaping Sustainable Intensive Production Systems - Improved Crops and Cropping Systems in the Developing World
Conservation agriculture (CA) has been proposed as an adapted set of management principles that assures a more sustainable agricultural production. It combines the following basic principles: (1) reduction in tillage, (2) retention of adequate levels of crop residues and soil surface cover, (3) u...

Conservation agriculture as a means to mitigate and adapt to climate change, a case study from Mexico
Wheat is an important food and income source and estimated demand for wheat in the developing world is projected to increase substantially. The objectives of this study were to gain insight into (i) the effect of tillage straw system on yield and yield components (number of grains per m2 and thou...

Wheat yield and tillage-straw management system × year interaction explained by climatic co-variables for an irrigated bed planting system in northwestern Mexico
Rainfed crop management systems need to be optimized to provide more resilient options to cope with projected climatic scenarios forecasting a decrease in mean precipitation and more frequent extreme drought periods in Mexico. Soil water content (0 60 cm) was measured during three crop cycles in ...

Soil water content, maize yield and its stability as affected by tillage and crop residue management in rainfed semi-arid highlands
The effects of climate change can already be felt around the world, and they will likely impact all facets of human civilization—from health, livelihood security, agricultural production, and shelter to international trade. Since anthropogenic factors are mainly to blame for the current trends in...

Greenhouse gas emissions from nontilled, permanent raised, and conventionally tilled beds in the central highlands of Mexico
Human efforts to produce ever-greater amounts of food leave their mark on the environment. Persistent use of conventional farming practices based on extensive tillage, especially when combined with removal or in situ burning of crop residue, have magnified soil erosion losses and the soil resourc...

Conservation agriculture and carbon sequestration: between myth and farmer reality
Provision of adequate and timely information to farmers on the ground means optimizing crop production decisions, reducing costs and eliminating adverse effects of overuse of agricultural inputs, e.g. fertilizer.
AgroTutor aims to support farmers across Mexico with benchmarking information, incl...

Promoting sustainable agricultural intensification and crowdsourcing plot information
In 1991, the ‘International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center’ (CIMMYT) started a field experiment in the rain fed Mexican highlands to investigate conservation agriculture (CA) as a sustainable alternative for conventional maize production practices (CT). CT techniques, characterized by deep ti...

Greenhouse gas emissions under conservation agriculture compared to traditional cultivation of maize in the central highlands of Mexico
Conservation agriculture based on (1) minimal soil movement, (2) retention of rational amounts of crop residue, (3) economically viable crop rotations restores soil fertility. Conservation agriculture improves soil characteristics, but it remains to be seen how zero tillage (ZT) affected greenhou...
