Inadequate quantity and quality of livestock feed is a persistent constraint to productivity for mixed crop-livestock farming in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. To assess on-farm niches of improved forages, demonstration trials and participatory on-farm research were conducted in four diffe...

A stem gall nematode is reported for the first time on the promising tropical pasture legume Desmodium ovalifolium CIAT 350 in Colombia. Stem galling was usually associated with damage caused by animal trampling. The nematode has been identified as a new genus of the family Anguinidae.

A breeding program to select low-mimosine lines of leucaena has been in progress since 1970. Selections were evaluated in two field trials at Lansdown. Although the low-mimosine selections did indeed have lower mimosine than the control cultivars, their dry matter yield was also inferior (about t...

Exotic legumes (Calopogonium mucunoides, Centrosema pubescens, Pueraria phaseoloides, Macroptilium atropurpureum) and indigenous legumes (Desmodium heterophyllum, Mimosa pudica, Vigna luteola) were compared for dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) production, nitrogen fixation and nitrogen tran...

Inoculum of the VA mycorrhizal fungusGlomus manihotis was added to an Oxisol containing only a moderate inoculum potential of indigenous VA mycorrhizal fungi. Its effect on growth and P uptake of two pasture plant species was investigated in pot experiments. This effect was studied at a range of ...

Pterotylenchus cecidogenus did not inhibit germination of Desmodium ovalifolium but did reduce survival of seedlings and root and stem growth. Stem gall formation was associated with nematode population densities which were positively correlated with plant age at time of inoculation. Nematode pop...

Legume tissue quality is a key factor for enhancement of feed resources and contribution to soil fertility in mixed crop-livestock production systems. To compare methods used by soil scientists and animal-nutritionists to assess quality of plant materials, three woody tropical legumes with contra...

A small-plot grazing trial was conducted to assess selection by oesophageal-fistulated steers of 5 shrubby legumes adapted to acid, low-fertility soils (Centrosema arenarium, Desmodium strigillosum, D. velutinum, Flemingia macrophylla, and Tadehagi triquetrum) and the herbaceous Centrosema acutif...
